I am curious why the translation ” What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his life ? ”
instead of “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?”
http://bible.cc/mark/8-36.htm
The verse is translated both ways, though I think most know it as ‘soul’.
I wondered, Why does soul seem more powerful to me? I think because it draws us to be thinking about the being of life, rather than just life, soul seems to imply or bring to mind that you can lose it even though you are still alive.
Did you have your own reason for choosing life over soul?

great question – the Greek is “psyche”. It is quite correctly and frequently translated as “life” see Matthew 2:20, 20:28; Mark 3:4.
But it can also carry the sense of “an essence which differs from the body”, in which case “soul” is an appropriate translation. Translators have to decide which they are going to use and they differ in their choices. In Mark 8:36 the NRSV (which I use) translates it as “life”.
I think the conclusion you have drawn about Mark 8:36 is absolutely the correct place to go. The interesting thing about the translation “life” is that it suggests that it is possible to be “alive” without in fact actually being “alive”. This seems to me a significant point worth making. A breathing body and a beating heart do not necessarily constitute a “psyche”.
“Psyche” is used twice in Matthew 6:25 to make exactly this point; there is “life” but then there is a “more than…” dimension to life.

interesting especially as ‘psyche’ is commonly understood as ‘soul’.
