The Christian story needs to deal with process and dynamism at every level.
Cosmogenesis is the movement away from a static universe.
For Teilhard evolution is not a straight line moving at a fixed rate. It is a process, like water heating to a boil.
Biosphere was a new concept coined by Teilhard. At some point there was a critical mass and then there was life.
The next level was the noosphere – another envelope/film that circled the earth, that was triggered by the development of one thought.
Once a phase is crossed over it is crossed once and once only. Life came out of non-life only once.
Once the biosphere came onto the earth, that’s where the action is = the profusion of forms. Rocks and cells are no longer evolving. Evolution proceeds by trial and error. Some things work, some things don’t.
The premise is that the action has now shifted to the noosphesre. There is some danger with this. It can be anthrocentric, devaluing aboriginal knowledge. Teilhard was not informed about aboriginal cultures.
Teilhard saw the world as a single breathing whole with an underlying unit in which humans have a special responsibility; but this is not about domination.
We have crossed a new threshold; so we better step up to the plate and work with it. There is an urgency to our waking up.
There is a lot of energy in the noosphere – internet communication. The world is being connected as never before. There is vitality here. The face of the planet is being restructured. We are the steamrollers changing the face of this planet. Don’t look at this with judgment. Look for where things are lightening up.
We have tied our wisdom to an old map.
Next is a transition to the theosphere – the capacity to convey soul attention – this is what the Dalai Lama is doing with his mindfulness work.
Teilhard did not have the maps of levels of consciousness – eg. self-reflection is not as high as Teilhard puts it (subject/object).
He points us to a way of reframing Christianity rather than putting our Christianity in opposition. It is showing where the vitality is. How do we gird our loins and help with this? Conscious servanthood – hopeful creative dialogue.
Consciousness is there from the beginning but at the level of atomicity. It is chopped into pieces.
watch resistance and clenching
what equips us to walk in the midst of the seas of change?
develop a flexible attention – work both in silence and life. Silence/retreat is not about tanking up. You have to draw your strength from something that does not deplete right in the midst of things.
we need to draw our identity from deeper places
