Raimon Pannikar sees inside the mind of Jesus, the divine pole – “I and the Father are one.” And then he looks at the human, the contingent, the Abba/Papa creature pole.

Both of these experiences are ultimately valid for Jesus, as they are for all human beings.

So you don’t go around saying , “I am God,” but neither do you shrink from your divinity. In the practiced motion of kenosis, of giving it away, you are able to access both truths without getting stuck in either of these irreducible truths of your being, just like Jesus.

So you can claim as in John 17 “as you Father are in me and I am in you may they be in us, I in them, you in me, that they may be completely one.” This farewell discourse is the ultimate statement of the mind of Christ.

Self-giving is the third force that allows divinity and humanity to co-exist in a complete outpouring reality.

Beatrice Bruteau asked, how does the world get involved in the circle of the Trinity? How is it that the Trinity drives forward?

Beatrice Bruteau is the first one who began to look at it as a cosmogonic template, as something that has built into it, by the very way it is structured, the imperative to drive outward and bring new things into creation.

The Trinity is the DNA, the seed embedded in everything.

“It is the presence of the Trinity as a pattern repeated at every scale of the cosmic order that makes the universe the manifestation of God and itself sacred and holy.” God’s Ecstasy

What if this thing is not just talking about love just going around in circles? What if there is something in the Trinity that forces it to drive forward into new creation.

She brings here attention to two things:

  1. Symbiotic unity – it is the core evolutionary principle. We got here by “clumping”. Things come together and stick together to form new units.

Two H’s come together with an O and you have water.  When you do that, there’s no backing out. It’s a new unit. It has emergent properties that belong to the whole and not the parts alone.

The way we got from nothing to something is when things form newer and newer more complex units, differentiation of function within a single whole. Symbiotic unity. Law of Three.

Once you have the cells, the floodgates are opened.  All of a sudden you have the tree of life with every in it.

The next evolutionary stage for humanity is not going to be enlightenment of individuals, or even the simultaneous enlightenment of 1,000 individuals in the room. It is going to be the capacity to form a new coherent unit with the same specialization of function and emerging properties that exist in a cell.

We create a learning and expressing vehicle that is bigger than the sum of the parts. No backing out. It’s not coexist; it’s coalesce.

The Trinity is a template of the evolutionary principle. It pushes us into new forms.

  1. Because of its threeness Trinity is symmetry breaking. Things in binary form come to equilibrium and stasis. But threeness can’t reach an equilibrium in itself. It has to move forward into a different dimension in order to resolve itself. Symmetry breaking is an evolutionary principle.

Threeness is also the necessary condition for the emergence of agape love. Love that is all in itself is loveless. And love that is totally focused on the thou, becomes essentially meta-narcissistic. You are simply completely absorbed in each other, as in those first giddy six weeks of a romance, it’s only the other.

Love matures into a step where you realize that in order to really love the other, you have to love what the beloved loves, not out of co-dependency but because the beloved’s heart has so much become your heart, that they become a single field that looks out on the world.

Love reaches out to embrace the wholeness of the other, the deepest self to deepest self.
