Thursday 18 May 2018 8:55 a.m. Catherine Pate – “Parish-Based Social Media”

Online we have all been left to our own devices. We now understand that, when we establish a presence online, we are taking up space just as if we have purchased a piece of real estate.

We need to think about how we manage that space collectively and responsibly.

How do we want to manage this space in ways that claim our online space collectively?

We are one organization and we have many ways of being; so let’s start living that way online.

11:00 a.m. Bishop Logan McMenamie

1. As we move towards Synod, there are three areas we will be focusing on:

  • a. the National Stewardship Program – “Giving Our Thanks And Praise” This is about Time, Talents, and Treasure. We need to understand that our relationship to money is a spiritual issue.
  • b. re-booting the vision particularly working with our “vision animator”. Brendon Neilson who is working to prepare for Synod 2018.
  • c.transforming futures – we need look look at major gives to build our financial base and to take pressure off parishes. A case is being made, identifying our needs. Help is coming to support parishes in building their cases.

2. Use of language – Assessment is a covenant relationship. It is NOT a Diocesan tax. The Diocesan office is there to support our shared ministry. We are the Diocese. We are not a confederation of parishes. We are a Diocese doing ministry in a variety of settings. How do we as a Diocese do ministry in Port Alberni?

3. BCP 555 – we all need to be developing a rhythm of life

4. Congratulations to those who put their Annual Reports in the form of the Diocesan Vision. For your continuing education, please look at the needs of your parishes and of the Diocese and tailor a program for your on-going education that fits with those needs, not simply your personal individual interests. What helps you relate to your parish and the Diocese?

5. Liturgy – do some work reflecting on your liturgical practices. Read some contemporary stuff on liturgy. Reflect on what happens in your community on Sunday morning and be careful. Try to balance flexibility and novelty.  Be attentive to what you are wearing.

6. It is not appropriate to allow other faith communities to use our church buildings for worship.

7. An online Safe Church Program is coming. There will no longer be a clergy only Safe Church Program.

8. Dismantling Racism will become a requirement for all clergy in our Diocese. This program causes us to look at our own racism and to name it wherever we see it.

9. Ministry of Deacons – the liturgical role for deacons is secondary. Their primary role is out in the world with the poor, declaring justice and compassion for all.

10. October 16 – clergy day with Primate.

Part of your terms of employment is that you are at Clergy Conference and attend Clergy Days, Regional Gatherings, and Synod.

I believe we have changed as a clergy cohort. We are here together to support one another. I am very proud of you as clergy of this Diocese.

This Clergy Conference has been the draft of the Spirit for me. We are in a good place as a Diocese. I want to leave you with a Kris Kristofferson song:

To Beat The Devil

[Spoken Intro]
A couple of years back, I come across a great and wasted friend of mine in the hallway of a recording studio

And while he was reciting some poetry to me that he’d written, I saw that he was about a step away from dyin’ and I couldn’t help but wonder why

And the lines of this song occurred to me

I’m happy to say he’s no longer wasted and he’s got him a good woman

And I’d like to dedicate this to John and June, who helped show me how to beat the devil

[Kris’s Verse 1]

It was winter time in Nashville, down on music city row
And I was lookin’ for a place to get myself out of the cold
To warm the frozen feelin’ that was eatin’ at my soul
Keep the chilly wind off my guitar

My thirsty wanted whisky; my hungry needed beans

But it’d been of month of paydays since I’d heard that eagle scream
So with a stomach full of empty and a pocket full of dreams
I left my pride and stepped inside a bar
Actually, I guess you’d could call it a Tavern
Cigarette smoke to the ceiling and sawdust on the floor

Friendly shadows

I saw that there was just one old man sittin’ at the bar
And in the mirror I could see him checkin’ me and my guitar
An’ he turned and said, “Come up here boy, and show us what you are.”

I said, “I’m dry.” He bought me a beer
He nodded at my guitar and said, “It’s a tough life, ain’t it?”
I just looked at him. He said, “You ain’t makin’ any money, are you?”

I said, “You’ve been readin’ my mail.”
He just smiled and said, “Let me see that guitar
“I’ve got something you oughta hear.”

Then he laid it on me:

[The Devil’s 1st Verse]

If you waste your time a-talkin’ to the people who don’t listen
To the things that you are sayin’, who do you think’s gonna hear
And if you should die explainin’ how the things that they complain about

Are things they could be changin’, who do you think’s gonna care?”

There were other lonely singers in a world turned deaf and blind
Who were crucified for what they tried to show
And their voices have been scattered by the swirling winds of time
‘Cos the truth remains that no-one wants to know

[Kris’s Verse 2]

Well, the old man was a stranger, but I’d heard his song before
Back when failure had me locked out on the wrong side of the door
When no-one stood behind me but my shadow on the floor
And lonesome was more than a state of mind

You see, the devil haunts a hungry man
If you don’t wanna join him, you got to beat him
I ain’t sayin’ I beat the devil, but I drank his beer for nothing
Then I stole his song

[Kris sing the Devils 2nd Verse]

And you still can hear me singin’ to the people who don’t listen
To the things that I am sayin’, prayin’ someone’s gonna hear
And I guess I’ll die explaining how the things that they complain about
Are things they could be changin’, hopin’ someone’s gonna care

I was born a lonely singer, and I’m bound to die the same

But I’ve got to feed the hunger in my soul
And if I never have a nickel, I won’t ever die ashamed
‘Cos I don’t believe that no-one wants to know

In your ministry sing this song. You are not wasting your time.
