10For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it.

11For the one who said, ‘You shall not commit adultery’, also said, ‘You shall not murder.’ Now if you do not commit adultery but if you murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.

There are no small things in the spiritual life.

In reference to adultery, Jesus said,

that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart (Matthew 5:28).

Talking about anger, Jesus taught,

You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, “You shall not murder”; and “whoever murders shall be liable to judgement.” But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgement; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, “You fool”, you will be liable to the hell of fire. (Matthew 5:21,22)

Jesus levelled the playing field. There are no good guys and no bad guys. Measured against “the law,” we all fail “in one point,” and are all “accountable for all of it.” Pauls says, succinctly “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)

Honesty requires I acknowledge that, there are times, in small ways and sometimes large, when I live in opposition to the law of love. I stifle that power of love at the heart of life. I contravene the pattern that dictates how life is designed to work. And, as Richard Rohr says, “How we do anything, is how we do everything.” Every part of my life is a hologram for every other part. I do not function in hermetically sealed little compartments.

Over and over every day, I choose to allow my own needs, wants and desires to dictate my choices or I give myself to the power and guidance of love. When I place my small self at the centre of the universe and allow that needy little demanding dictator to rule, I live as “a transgressor of the law.” When I give myself to the power of love, the Spirit of life seeps into every dimension of my life. No aspect of life is ever excluded, when I choose to live in alignment with love.
