You have set your glory above the heavens.

2   Out of the mouths of babes and infants
you have founded a bulwark because of your foes,
to silence the enemy and the avenger.

There are times when I look in all the wrong places for a sense of security and strength. I try to build a fortress against my “foes” and “to silence the enemy and the avenger” using the woefully inadequate weapons of worldly power and human intellect.

In Matthew chapter 21, Jesus was confronted by the theologians of his day who were criticizing the people in the temple for bearing witness to the greatness they had experienced in Jesus. Jesus responded with a reference to Psalm 8:2 saying:

“Yes; have you never read, ‘Out of the mouths of infants and nursing babies
you have prepared praise for yourself’?”
(Matthew 21:16)

It is not the great wisdom of the intellect, or the well-reasoned arguments of the highly educated theologian that silences “the enemy.” It is not the powerful eloquence of scintillating preaching or the grand drama of immaculately choreographed liturgy that defeats “the avenger.” It is not the powers of military, government or material wealth that are able to build a “bulwark” against my “foes.”

The truth and security for which my heart longs are found in the experience of the beauty and majesty of God’s creation and the purity, innocence and vulnerability of “babes and infants.”

The Presence I call “God” at the heart of life, is discerned, not through dependence on the mind, but through the opening that occurs within when I am touched by majesty and beauty. It is a movement similar to the feeling most people experience when confronted with a baby. Something stirs deep inside my being. There are no words that adequately capture this experience. It is a physical sensation of warmth and softening. This inner softening and opening is the path to truth and strength which is the source of true security and deep wisdom.

What enables heart-opening in my life?

Lord, help me not to fear the softening and opening that are the path to an awareness of your presence.
