34Mary said to the angel, ‘How can this be, since I am a virgin?’
30The angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God.
26In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David.
13But the angel said to Zechariah, ‘Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John. 14You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, 15for he will be great in the sight of the Lord.
Six years ago I tried to imagine what Mary might have felt upon receiving Gabriel’s announcement of the impending birth of her son.
Gabriel replied, “The Spirit of God will come on you, and the power of God will enfold you. Therefore the child you bear will be holy.
“And now your relative Elizabeth who is past child-bearing age has also conceived a son; she is six months pregnant. “
The angel said to Mary, “Rejoice, woman of grace. God is with you.”
Mary was greatly troubled and wondered about Gabriel’s words.
